Community Events to Support Early Detection of Breast Cancer

During the month of October, Huron Regional Medical Center partners with several groups in the community to raise awareness and encourage women to schedule mammograms through a variety of activities and by offering free mammograms to women in need.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will get breast cancer. While incidence rates of breast cancer have increased by .5% per year in recent years, breast cancer deaths have decreased consistently since 1989, largely due to early detection activities such as regular mammograms. Thanks to the generous donations of area businesses and residents to the HRMC Foundation, the hospital offers free mammograms to women in need.

Women between the ages of 40-64 or under the age of 40 with an increased risk who have not had a mammogram in one year and do not have insurance that covers the diagnostic scan are eligible to receive a free mammogram.

To help raise awareness of breast cancer and early detection, HRMC is partnering with several local groups during October’s Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness month. Several events are planned, including:

·      October 14, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Prostrollo Motor 1-Mile Walk for Breast Cancer

·      October 19, 4:30-8:00 p.m., Runnings Farm & Fleet annual Ladies’ Night Out

·      October 25, 7 p.m., Huron High School Pink Out Volleyball Match

Funds raised will benefit the HRMC Foundation’s We’ve Got You Covered program, which provides free mammograms to women in need. Also benefiting the program, Cookie Dough Cupcakes will donate one dollar for each pink ribbon cupcake sold during the month of October.
