Huron Community Foundation Contributes $75,000 to Dialysis Expansion
The Huron Community Foundation (HCF) recently presented a contribution of $75,000 to support the expansion of dialysis services at Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) to Levi Kary, HRMC Foundation Executive Director and Robert Hohm, MD, chairman of the Dialysis Capital Campaign Committee for the Foundation.
In the fall of 2022, Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) announced a $2.45 million project to relocate and expand dialysis services to an easy-to-access, one level treatment center at 142 Third Street SE in Huron. The HRMC Board of Directors determined to move forward with expansion and relocation in response to an aging water system and limited capacity in the current location in the Central Towers at HRMC.
At one time, over 14 people were on the waiting list to receive life-sustaining dialysis in Huron. The current unit, housing a total of seven treatment chairs, has the capacity to serve 21 patients per week. The expanded center will house 12 chairs, increasing the capacity to serve up to 36 patients per week.
In an effort to meet the need, the HRMC Foundation formed a special capital campaign committee and pledged to raise half of the project cost. “We’ve got a great group of people on this committee who are passionate about the project and an amazing community to support sustaining and expanding dialysis in Huron,” says Kary. “This contribution by the Huron Community Foundation is monumental. We couldn’t be more thankful.”
The mission of the Huron Community Foundation is to support programs that enhance the quality of life in and around Huron. President of the Advisory Council for the Huron Community Foundation, Steve Gohn, expressed support for the project, “This was one of those projects that checked all the boxes and the board felt we had to support. HCF has been proud to partner with the HRMC Foundation in the past and this project is another example of how we can leverage our resources to improve the quality of life in Huron. If you have known anyone needing dialysis, you understand how important this project is and would encourage people to contact the HRMC Foundation to donate.”
The expansion and renovation at the new location is on track for completion by the end of May, with an anticipated move-in date in mid-June. HRMC and the HRMC Foundation will host a public open house at the new location at 142 3rd Street on Tuesday, June 6 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
