Kick Off the Season with HRMC Foundation’s Golfing for a Cause

Another golf season is upon us, and the HRMC Foundation is teeing off early with the Golfing for a Cause Breast Cancer Awareness tournament on Wednesday, June 15, at Broadland Creek National Golf Course, according to Shawn Martin, HRMC Foundation executive director.

“Although this tournament has been on the calendar for many years, this is the first time it has been held this early in the season,” explained Martin. “We’ve officially taken on the planning responsibilities from a dedicated committee who conceived of the tournament to support a friend who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and raise awareness of this potentially deadly disease. We appreciate the opportunity to continue their efforts, while raising funds to support women in need of assistance with early detection.”

This 18-hole best ball scramble promises to be a fun, relaxing day on the course. There will be games, door prizes and a silent auction. “Proceeds from the event benefit ‘We've Got You Covered,’” said Martin. “Thanks to the generous support of our donors, this program pays the cost of mammograms for women in need who don’t have insurance or whose insurance doesn't cover mammograms”

Mammograms remain the gold standard for catching breast cancer in its early stages. The Susan G. Komen Foundation estimates that there will be 287,850 new breast cancer cases among women in the U.S. this year. Early detection is the key to successful outcomes. HRMC recently added 3D mammography in the fight against breast cancer.

This technology allows for a deeper, three-dimensional look at breast tissue, increasing the chances of finding tumors that might otherwise go undetected. In 2021, the Golfing for a Cause tournament and our other breast cancer awareness events raised funds to support the purchase of the 3D mammo system.

The cost for a 4-person team is $300, including golf cart and green fees. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. You can register your team at Broadland Creek Golf Course or call the HRMC Foundation at 605-353-6319.
