A Calling to Care

Our volunteers donate more than 500 hours a week of their service, all from their desire to care for others

When you see a person in our hallways—or in the community—with one of these deep red coats on, be sure to say hello.

And, be sure to thank them.

They are a member of our volunteer auxiliary who, collectively, donate more than 500 hours of service each week. Yes, each week.

Our volunteers were once teachers, businessmen and women, administrative assistants, and friendly neighbors. Today they are proud to serve our community as volunteers at Huron Regional Medical Center. “I’ve never regretted the time I give to the patients and their families at our hospital,” Jackie Spillman, co-president of our volunteer group, said.

Volunteers play a critical role in the work of the hospital. Not only do they run the gift shop and help bring patients to surgery, but they also sit with patients and their families, lending an ear—and sometimes a laugh—during moments of healing and recovery.

Talk to any one of our volunteers and they will also likely share their gratitude for the doctors and nurses who keep Huron healthy. “This is our home. This is a place where people help people. And we must always ensure that we can be there for one another,” Jackie continued.

“Every time I’m here, I learn something new about my community, about our history in Huron, about the needs of fellow residents, and about lives that have been well-lived.”

Caring for others has been a constant, no matter the growth of the hospital or the broader community. And with gifts to support the work of Huron Regional Medical Center Foundation, our hospital will continue to invest in knowledge, state-of-the-art technology, and programming that, like our volunteers, gives all our residents the gift of time.
